About Us

We believe your home is who you are, a unique environment that is authentically you. A place for relaxing, personal expression and connecting with others. With this in mind, we design and source distinctive products to cater to the wide variety of interior tastes and lifestyles represented in our customer base. From high-end residential projects through to accessible home furnishings for busy families, we design for them all.

We are a New Zealand family owned business.

We have been sourcing, designing, manufacturing, and innovating textile products for over 80 years. Today the family legacy continues, four generations on, to provide discerning clients with outstanding interior furnishings and customer service to match. We design and develop our products from our hometown in Pukekohe, New Zealand.

Our Heritage

Our passion for design has brought quality and style to New Zealand homes and the fashion industry since the late 1930’s. The Furtex story began with our great-grandfather Arnold Heath, who founded the business in late 1939 under the name of Arnold.M.Heath Ltd. The emphasis turned towards the soft furnishings market in 1981 as the third generation took the reins. Today the company has grown to include three distinct brands – Baya, Ollo and Heirloom.

Furtex remains one of the most celebrated importers, designers and wholesalers of textiles, fur fabrics, and soft furnishings in New Zealand. "We love the work we do, and the way our company continues to evolve. We pride ourselves on our many years of experience and the reputation we have established within the soft furnishings sector of New Zealand”

See our timeline below for some of our key milestones.

Our Story

Early 1930’s

Our great grandfather Arnold Heath trains as a fur skin buyer, starting his career in Dunedin. Arnold regularly travels the world sourcing high quality furs and hides.

1934 - Love is in the air

Arnold meets his wife Bess in New York while travelling abroad to the fur auctions. A year later their eldest son, John, is born.

1939 - Branching out

Arnold starts his own company, Arnold.M.Heath Ltd, with headquarters at 48 Shortland Street, Auckland.

Partnership established

Arnold’s long-time friend and furrier Jim Suckling joins him in the business.

1930’s – 40’s

Demand for fur and hides is high in the 1930’s and 40’s, with fur being used for luxury coats and other items. Arnold.M.Heath Limited becomes the preferred supplier to New Zealand’s fur product manufacturers.

1963 - Second generation

The second generation enters the business as Arnold’s son, John Heath takes the reins, renaming it ‘Heath Furs & Textiles Ltd’. Imitation faux fur fabrics are introduced.

1981 - 3rd Generation

David Heath joins the business in 1981. Younger brother Ben joins him as a co-director in 1996.

Early 90’s - Anti-fur movement

Anti-fur campaigns in the 90’s encourage the company to concentrate on faux fur, velour and imitation suede textiles.

1991 - A big move

The company moves into their purpose-built offices, showroom, and warehouse at 28 Tobin Street, Pukekohe.

New developments for Furtex

Furtex begins creating a luxury, premium range of natural furs, hides and woollen products for home interiors. In-house design and manufacture are set up.
